Rode UberX with quantum13 and Tadija to King Street Station. Got our boarding passes. Quick food and drink to go from a cafe around the corner. I ate an egg and cheese croissant sandwich while we waited. Amtrak 510 to Vancouver BC. Nap. Ate fruit salad. Snacked on banana chips. Taxi to our hotels: quantum13 and Tadija in Sheraton Wall Centre and me in The Burrard. settled. dim sum lunch with Clara, quantum13, and Tadija at Kirin. This is where I met Clara. Bought beverages at a drug store. We walked cambie street bridge to yaletown. Clara left us for home. Back to hotels. Shower, rested. Walked to Canada Place. This is when I met markus. Vancouver Metropolitan Symphony at Canada Place near Cactus Club. The others got gelato from nearby. We listened to the symphony play various selections while seaplanes landed and the sun set. We walked to Wall Centre. quantum13 and Tadija dropped some stuff at their room. We walked alongside the Davie Street Block Party to dinner at Sushi Bella. Clara went home. The rest of us went to Markus' and chilled. He served prosecco, pistachios, and peanuts. I walked quantum13 and Tadija to their floor before returning to The Burrard. To bed late.

Sat Aug 2, 2014

Iced Nespresso in the room. I didn't like how it tasted, so I poured it down the sink drain. Container: yogurt parfait with granola, iced Americano with cream. Errands: drug store for different suntan lotion, got Canada bucks from an ATM. Fido with Kiwi helping, bought a SIM card and plan for $33 CDN. Hotel to apply suntan lotion. Met with Clara at Container. We walked downtown to Chinatown then Gastown then Yaletown, taking photos and seeing more interesting foods than we could eat. Along the way Clara's friend Maggie joined us. Rested. Regrouped at Davie and Burrard. Went to Markus' with a feast that Clara and Markus provided: Stepho's, Urban Fare, Kiisu, Beard Papa, more. We also enjoyed the company of Markus' parrot named Cricket. Walked to Sunset Beach Park, encountering steven and gordon on the way. Steven joined us. We staked out two spots, then watched the Japan fireworks show. I encountered difficulty with the synchronized music; the show did not seem to start on time and the app seemed to presume that it would because it would resync but obviously not be in sync. There was a choice to start it manually, but I accidentally hit the start button at the wrong time and there was no way I could find to recover from it. I realized later I should have given up on the app once I saw it not working. In this situation, it would have been better to ignore broken technology than to try to make it work during a live performance. The show was impressive even without sound, particularly at the end. But still it made me long for a Disney fireworks show. Afterward Clara went home, and we lost Steven and Markus in the crowd. quantum13, Tadija, and I returned to our hotels for a brief rest before heading to Davie Street for a late drink with Austin joining. This is where I met Austin. We ended up at Moxie's where we were served by Crystal. The bar and kitchen were overwhelmed; Crystal was very apologetic. A round of drinks, an order of 7 potstickers. Afterward quantum13 and Tadija returned to the hotel. Austin and I waited in line at 1181 Davie for maybe 40 minutes, meeting a large group of Europeans including Ratna (sp?), Lennert (sp?)(aka Leonard), and another woman whose name I cannot recall but If I recall correctly she was the one from Perpignon. "J'aime Collioure!" I smiled, and she nodded enthusiastically in French. We got in about a quarter to 2:00 AM, and upon entering it was clear that the nightclub was only 60% full, so it was puzzling why we had to wait so long. The bartenders were extraordinarily eyepleasing. Music by DJ Davo was excellent. We stayed a while then left to try to get in at Pumpjack but it still had a line and we decided it wasn't worth the wait, especially given the waiting experience we just had. Austin walked me to the Burrard, and I helped him hail a cab. The front desk called a cab company and the wait was 15 minutes, which Austin declined. On the street we were successful in about 8 minutes and he was on his way. I had forgotten until later that we should have walked one minute to Wall Centre where there were likely taxis waiting. To bed very late.

Sun Aug 3, 2014

Slept in. Banana chips in the room. Brunch at Cazba. Parade. Split up. I walked through the festival taking photos and enjoying the live entertainment. Back to the hotel for a shower and rest. Met Adrian from Sydney, Sylvain, Matt, Chris, Kachi. Buffet dinner on the cruise: I ate salad with ranch dressing, cole slaw, vegetable lasagne, roast beef with sauce.

no bikes avail. eat chicken wraps fail, feastro food truck. barclay heritage square park, realized I had phone problems again, connected with quantum13 again, walked to Wall centre and hung out in their room until their late checkout time, they dropped luggage in my room, we chatted over refreshments at container, I walked them to wall centre for a cab and said goodbyes, back to the Burrard, walked to fido on Davie and added 10 CDN to my account, met Markus, drove to second beach pool, swam, bought candy from a food truck called Candy Meister: Aseli assorted ocean mix, crunchy caramel peanuts, green woodruff leaves, fizzy candy, spicy ginger sticks. After returning to the car we completed the circumference tour of the park and he showed me the SkyTrain stop to get to the airport before dropping me at The Burrard. Shower. Internet speed test revealed 4.8 Mbps down and 1.2 up—decent. To bed late.

Tue Aug 5, 2014

slept in. checked out of the burrard, left luggage in storage with them. walked to robson and howe. hoisin chicken wrap from eat chicken wraps and drank bottled water i brought with me—yummy! vancouver art gallery. returned to the burrard. lunch at container: culver city salad: no-grains salad, iced americano with cream. picked up my bags. walked six blocks to yaletown skytrain. skytrain to YVR airport was pretty easy. signs in the train said the cars were air-conditioned but i could not tell. it was not cold or even cool, and i could detect no ventilation at all. i had to alight when someone stinky boarded and stood next to me, then caught the next train. Refreshment from Starbucks: Naked fruit and vegetable drink: about $5. Charged my iPhone at a charging station next to seats in the waiting area. WestJet flight 1776 to SFO. Did some unpacking.

A recent security training I took at work described a recent change in policy that even if you're just checking UCSF email on a computer the computer needs to be encrypted. I don't want FileVault or PGP on my home computer and I no longer work from home, so I removed the account. I was checking only calendar items, not mail, so now at home if I want to see my work calendar I must use either my iPhone or my iPad which both have hardware encryption.

Breakfast at home: super granola with unsweetened almond milk. Rode Muni to UCSF Parnassus. UCSF shuttle from Parnassus to Laurel Heights. Linkchecking, kiosk work. Sprint standup. Helped Frances K resolve a problem with ITS with network folder access. Reported and followed up with servint regarding problems encountered following yesterday's web outage. Staged web updates for Leslie M: preview session. Lunch at Pasta Pomodoro: lunch express: capellini tre colori with minestrone soup, dolce piatto ($12). This was the second disappointing Pasta Pomodoro experience I have had in recent memory. The dolce piatto ($7.50) was a sampler plate of chocolate cake, cheesecake, and seasonal gelato. Its description included "dolce cioccolato" which I saw elsewhere on the menu was a warm chocolate cake but when the dessert arrived, the chocolate cake was not warm. In fact, it and the cheesecake had been hurriedly taken out of the freezer; there was still a crisp layer of frost on top. The menu needs to make it clearer that the dolce cioccolato in the dolce piatto is not the same as the standalone dolce cioccolato. The (peach?) gelato was tasty, so I ate it along with sauced fresh berries. Later I expressed my disappointment while offering to still pay for the dessert since I ate part of it, but in the end Brad apologized and removed it from the bill. My bill was originally $22.27. I also had a $5 off coupon for completing a survey following a previous meal, so my resulting bill was $7.61. I tipped $3.50 because service by Brad was good despite the kitchen's error with the dessert. Afterward I bought wine at Wine Expression. Met with Kirk H and Chandler M by phone about encryption for students. Met with Eric, Susie, and Kevin about the proposed identity guidelines for web from University Relations. Content inventory work with Susie. Prepared a response to the proposed UCSF brand guidelines for web, sent it to the team for review. Rode UberX to Scot and ECB's. WTFW dinner with many from the Syndicate at Scot and ECB's with a birthday celebration for Alan. ECB was in NYC. I met Ben T. Dan B let me share his UberX ride to Forest Hill Station, and I rode Muni home from there.

Lunch at the JCC: spinach nut burger with fries. Alex observed me work for about an hour today. After receiving unsolicited mail at a ten-year-old work mailing address, then investigating the company's offer, I called 1-800-673-4718 and asked to be removed from the mailing list for Naked Wines. Lots of content inventory work. Rode UberX home since it was past 7 PM. Laundry. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from King of Thai Noodle: noodle soup, fried rice. Worked on Danny's forthcoming website: created something essentially identical to a stock image (164919851 on shutterstock) from scratch in Photoshop because I didn't want to pay for it and it also because wasn't big enough for what I needed.

Sat Aug 23, 2014

Breakfast: kale salad, grapes, water. Patrick and I drove and checked in to Four Seasons Hotel Silicon Valley at East Palo Alto. Midafternoon meal poolside on the roof: we split a chicken cobb salad ($22) and a summer roll ($15). Patrick had a sangria ($15). I had a ginger berry mule ($15). $12 service charge automatically included. $7 tax. About $86 total; a very pricey lunch. Food took a little longer than expected to arrive; the server had warned us in advance but considering the price of this hotel I was disappointed. After the food arrived, and after our deliverator had left, we noticed that the salad dressing was missing, and it was frustratingly difficult to get the attention of any service staff for about six minutes. The food was good—what we had expected, not outstanding. However, the shrimp summer rolls were accompanied by two dipping sauces, both with deliciously complex flavors. Wedding ceremony and reception for Quyen and Dave at INDO Restaurant and Lounge in Palo Alto. We had a great time. The food was excellent and the wait staff treated us very well. For some strange reason there were many spills and dropped glasses tonight. I had intended to bring my camera but forgot it in the hotel room. I realized from this and previous experiences I enjoy weddings more when I don't bring my camera, otherwise I'm preoccupied with getting good shots rather than relaxing and enjoying the moment.

Sun Aug 24, 2014

A 6.0 earthquake occurred in the middle of the night. I had been up for the previous half hour; couldn't sleep. Patrick had awoken a minute before it occurred. We felt shaking, rolling, and swaying, and it lasted for seemingly a long time. We checked USGS and tweets, not much aside from the 6.0 rating and a few tweets and Facebook posts. We had planned to go to Viansa with Chris and Nate in the morning, but we soon realized that we needed to change plans. Back to bed, woke around 6:30 AM. Shower. Breakfast in the room: eggs, potatoes, toast with butter, V8, carrot juice, coffee. I soaked in the rooftop hot tub while Patrick took a bath in the room. Shower, rested. Checked out. Chris and Nate met us in the lobby. Wine country plans aborted, we drove to Stanford Shopping Center and ate at Max's Opera Cafe. Nate had a pastrami sandwich with red potato salad, Chris had a giant chicken pot pie, Patrick and I shared a salmon, dill, and havarti sandwich with arugula salad. Fries for the table. Iced teas for Patrick and Chris. Afterwards we walked through the gorgeous and visually perfect Apple Store and then the rest of the shopping center. We didn't buy anything. We drove them back to The Domain and said goodbye. Patrick drove us home. Unpacked, rested. Dinner at home with Patrick: delivery from King of Thai Noodle. Watched with Patrick about 30 minutes of the advance screening of Cheatin! by Bill Plympton on Vimeo. Lots of amusement so far; I'm very impressed. Decided to give in to the UCSF policy to use FileVault so that I can have my UCSF calendar on my home computer and home laptop. Sigh.

Watched with Patrick the remainder of the advance screening of Cheatin! by Bill Plympton on Vimeo. I enjoyed it very much. It's a beautiful film, somewhat surreal, and with an oddish style that's not quite like any other film I know. I particularly enjoyed the sound production, the interesting camera angles, and the unexpectedly funny moments, particularly to those already familiar with Bill Plympton's work. Weight training: weighted leg lift right, crunch. Wrote and posted SF recommendations near Moscone Center for quantum13's residents at his request.

I received an unexpected tweet from @danielpunkass. Sat Aug 30, 2014

I used realfavicongenerator.net for the first time today to build a favicon set for Danny's forthcoming website and it was so slick and easy I immediately did another set for Recharge and pushed it live. Drove to the Castro with Patrick, found all-day street parking unexpectedly easily. Late lunch at Gyro Xpress (415-554-0352, 499 Castro Street) with Patrick: chicken gyro wrap and ayran for Patrick, falafel wrap and peach juice for me. We walked in the Castro. Ice cream at Eureka! Cafe (451 Castro Street): dutch chocolate for Patrick, coffee for me. Nap. Dinner at home with Patrick: leftover pizza from last night, seedless grapes. Patrick made an experimental post-dinner cocktail for us but it turned out poorly. Don't mix gin with midori—too sweet, too thick. We threw it out. Watched part of The Darjeeling Limited on Netflix DVD with Patrick and our standard popcorn configuration. So far: quirky fun. Installed Microsoft Word for iPad since Patrick was interested in it. Recharge Spa work for Drew: edited text for a new brochure. Resolved a problem with the Recharge website in which the focusability of a floated anchor wrapping an image was interrupted by an h2 that followed it. I surmised a z-index problem, and removing display:relative from the h2 resolved it, so it seems it was something like that. Lots of work for Danny's forthcoming website: vcard mastering, logo mastering, avatar master drafted and sent for review, business card drafted and sent for review, domain purchase and assignment. Web work now just waiting on final testing.

Lots of work for Danny's forthcoming website: browser testing, Google Analytics setup, social media review. Breakfast at home: oatmeal with fresh, diced peach; cinnamon; unsweetened almond milk. Made Danny's site live and ordered business cards. Late lunch: veggie burger on pretzel bun with butter leaf lettuce, ketchup, and mustard; water. Emergency planning, starting with BK's gobag post on Facebook. Dinner at home with Patrick: grilled salmon with garlic and mustard, side butter leaf lettuce salad, grilled new potatoes with ketchup and mustard, water. More emergency planning.
